Visalia CHP officer killed by passing car after being ejected from motorcycle

More details surrounding the death of Visalia-area California Highway Patrol officer Brian Liles are being released.

Liles, 44, died in a crash near Highway 99 and Highway 190 in Tipton around 5 p.m. Monday.

While riding a department-issued motorcycle, Liles struck a semitractor-trailer and was ejected.

After being ejected Liles was hit by a passing vehicle.

“Brian was a true public servant. Just an amazing officer, and he’s going to be greatly missed,” said Damon Gilmore, commander of CHP’s Central Division.

CHP officers were the first to arrive and provided CPR while EMS arrived. Liles died at the scene at 5:32 p.m.

Gilmore said no other parties involved were injured, and they remained at the scene.

The Tulare County law enforcement community is slated to honor Liles — who was named officer of the year in 2024 — in an upcoming service. The CHP Academy will honor Liles during a ceremony Wednesday morning.

Liles is survived by his wife, two children, parents and siblings. He worked for the CHP for 16 years and had transferred to the Visalia area in 2019.

The investigation is ongoing and being handled by the CHP Central Division Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team.
