Fresno police officer struck by gunfire. Neighbor describes what happened

A police officer was hit by gunfire Saturday evening in southeast Fresno.

The shooting happened near Tulare and Eighth streets.

A woman told The Bee she heard gunshots from inside her home and saw officers near her neighbor’s house with their guns drawn on what was a possible suspect.

It was not immediately known what led up to the shooting. Interim Police Chief Mindy Casto was expected to provide details soon.

The woman added that a vehicle crashed into a nearby school and that there was a hole in her neighbor’s window.

Police put up crime scene tap around her neighbor’s home.

Police said the Fresno police officer is in stable condition.

The suspect’s condition is unknown.

Police said the area will be closed for an extended period of time.
