VIRGIN — Parts of Zion National Park are part of an evacuation warning due to a fire that started in the Kolob Smith Mesa area, according to a WashCo Safety Facebook post.

Washington County emergency services advised people to use Genasys Protect to keep up to date on evacuations, according to the Hurricane Fire Department.

Several structures are in the general vicinity of the fire, according to WashCo Safety. The Facebook post also said power in the area could be cut due to storm activity in Virgin.

The Genasys website advised people to prepare to leave in case they are asked to evacuate the area.

"Potential threat to life and/or property," Genasys said on its website. "Those who require additional time to evacuate, and those with pets and livestock should leave now."

The fire, now dubbed as the Mesa Fire, was at six acres in size as of 7 p.m., according to the Hurricane Fire Department.

"Several nearby evacuation zones have been placed under "Set" (Yellow) status out of an abundance of caution," the Hurricane Fire Department said. "Residents are encouraged to check the Washington County Emergency Management Genasys Protect evacuation map for the latest zone status and preparedness information."

The Hurricane Fire Department said fire resources were also being provided from the State of Utah and Zion National Park. There was no word on how the fire started at the time of publication.
