ELBERTA, Utah County — A motorcyclist died Sunday night after being hit while stopped on the side of the road on U.S. 6, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The motorcyclist, a 46-year-old man, stopped due to a mechanical issue at milepost 147 near Elberta, at about 10:15 p.m., Sgt. Luis Silva said. A passenger on the motorcycle stepped off the bike and moved onto the shoulder, further away from traffic.

A vehicle traveling westbound on U.S. 6 hit the stopped motorcycle driver. The man died at the scene, Silva said.

The driver and passenger of the vehicle had minor injuries due to the crash.

Both directions of the road were closed for hours after the crash; Silva estimated it would reopen around 1 a.m.
