SALT LAKE CITY — A West Jordan police officer was sentenced to six months of probation after a judge found him guilty of reckless driving.

Zachary Robert Allen, 35, was placed on administrative leave last June after being accused of driving while intoxicated and being involved in a road-rage confrontation. The West Jordan Police Department confirmed Wednesday that he is no longer an employee.

Allen was found guilty of reckless driving, reduced from a class B misdemeanor to an infraction, by Salt Lake County Justice Court Judge Shauna Graves-Robertson in a bench trial and was immediately sentenced. She ordered him on May 13 to serve probation, complete a defensive driving course and pay a $600 fine.

The Utah Highway Patrol responded to a crash on June 23, 2025, on state Route 201 near 8200 West after hearing reports that a vehicle was in the canal.

Another driver said Allen, who was driving a Toyota pickup truck, was "driving recklessly by driving at a high rate of speed, cutting other drivers off and following too closely," according to a police booking affidavit.

The man reported Allen attempted to pass him on the right and ran out of room, leading him to cut in front of the other man's car, hit its front bumper, and lose control, the affidavit states. Allen's car went through a guardrail and into the canal.

Allen told officers he did not have anything to drink and refused field sobriety tests, but an officer reported smelling an alcoholic beverage on his breath and a friend of Allen reported he had been drinking alcohol earlier that day, the arrest report says. Ultimately, Allen was not charged with driving under the influence.
