WEST VALLEY CITY — A 70-year-old man was hit and killed Sunday night while trying to cross 3500 South, and police say the driver of the car that hit him fled the scene.

West Valley City police said the man was crossing the street near 1940 West and did not have the right of way. Surveillance video from nearby businesses shows a car hit him at 8:17 p.m. and then sped away, police said.

Police later located the car and the driver, who was being questioned by investigators Sunday night. They have not yet released the name of the man who was killed.

The Utah Department of Transportation says westbound 3500 South is closed at 1950 West while police investigate the scene, and the closure could last through the night.
