Bar fight with 30 to 40 people injures 2 officers; 6 arrested

SALT LAKE CITY — A fight at a bar near 1700 S. Main injured two Salt Lake City police officers early Saturday morning.

The investigation began at 11:28 p.m. Friday. Once officers arrived at the bar, they learned someone had assaulted three people. The suspect reportedly left in a car before officers arrived. At that time, "no one injured needed extensive medical care," the police department said.

Once the situation was stabilized and the investigation was nearing completion, two groups began verbally arguing with each other, the Salt Lake Police Department said. Despite efforts to deescalate the fight, the two groups began physically fighting with each other.

Salt Lake City police said an estimated 30 to 40 people were involved in the fight.

Due to how large the fight was, at approximately 12:07 a.m. Saturday morning, "officers and detectives from across the city responded to the incident," the police department said.

"During the efforts to stabilize the incident, oleoresin capsicum (OC spray) was deployed" by officers, police said. "Even after officers separated the groups, several splinter fights continued." Officers were able to stabilize the scene and cancel the citywide response.

Police ultimately made six arrests in connection with the fight under charges that included disorderly conduct, interfering with an arresting officer, and public intoxication. Among those arrested for investigation of various alleged crimes are the following:

• Carnation Foni, 23.
• Chelzie Atoa, 32.
• Telphi Asiata, 32.
• Anastasia Asiata, 36.
• Edwina Atoa, 36.
• Lagi Fuiava, 38.

Charges have yet to be filed.

The two officers who were injured were not taken to the hospital.
