SALT LAKE CITY — A man was arrested on Friday and accused of fleeing from law enforcement officers who were trailing the driver both in the air and on the ground.
Jayden Cole Gorringe, 21, was driving an orange vehicle that a Utah Highway Patrol trooper documented as traveling at speeds of at least 106 mph, according to a police booking affidavit.
A trooper was driving on I-15 near 9000 South, heading north toward the Salt Lake County Jail, when they witnessed the vehicle speed by. The trooper attempted a traffic stop; however, the driver of the fleeing vehicle turned off the lights and continued speeding, prompting the trooper to cease pursuit, according to the affidavit.
With the help of Utah Department of Transportation cameras, troopers tracked down the fleeing vehicle in the area of 600 South and State Street in downtown Salt Lake City.
According to the police report, the vehicle was followed through downtown Salt Lake City by law enforcement both on the ground and by helicopter. Eventually, those in the helicopter lost sight of the vehicle before once again seeing the vehicle near state Route 201 and I-15 southbound.
Utah Highway Patrol trooper Davies Sanchez said the vehicle eventually left the freeway and stopped at the light of the 14600 South exit on I-15, where officers boxed the vehicle in, according to the affidavit. During the process of confining the fleeing vehicle, two patrol vehicles were struck when Gorringe attempted to flee again, police said.
One of the troopers said in the report the driver slammed the patrol vehicle on the driver's side, but the troopers were able to "pin" Gorringe's vehicle, and he was arrested without further incident.
The trooper added that his patrol vehicle was inoperable following the incident, but he accompanied the driver with another trooper to the Salt Lake County Jail for questioning.
"During the transport, the driver showed no remorse and repeatedly joked about fleeing from law enforcement," troopers said.
Gorringe was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of failure to stop at the command of police, assault on police, driving under the influence, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license.
