Rudy Giuliani moved from ICU but remains hospitalized
by Darryl Coote · UPIMay 7 (UPI) -- Rudy Giuliani has been moved from the intensive care unit but remains hospitalized, a spokesperson for the former New York City mayor said.
The 81-year-old was hospitalized in critical but stable condition on Sunday with pneumonia.
His spokesman, Ted Goodman, said Wednesday night that Giuliani was no longer in the ICU and "will spend some time recovering before leaving the hospital."
"The mayor and his family appreciate the outpouring of love and prayers sent his way," Goodman said in a social media statement.
Earlier this week, Goodman announced that Giuliani's condition was complicated by restrictive airway disease, a disease he said the mayor contracted by having run "toward the towers to help those in need" following the Sept. 11, 2001, attack, which occurred during his tenure leading New York City.
Because of his condition, pneumonia "quickly overwhelmed his body, requiring mechanical ventilation to maintain adequate oxygen."
The longtime ally of President Donald Trump has been plagued by legal issues since acting as a central figure in efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
In 2023, he was ordered to pay $148 million to two Georgia election workers he was found liable for defaming, and was disbarred in 2024 in both New York and Washington, D.C., over his 2020 election-related conduct, and later settled a separate election defamation case for an undisclosed amount with Dominion Voting Systems.
He also pleaded not guilty to charges related to alleged efforts to overturn Georgia's election results, a case that was dismissed in 2025.
