Reports: U.S., Iran working on plan to end war; Trump renews threats
by Lisa Hornung · UPIMay 6 (UPI) -- More negotiations to end the war in Iran were in progress, sources told media outlets Wednesday as President Donald Trump renewed threats against the country on social media.
"Assuming Iran agrees to give what has been agreed to, which is, perhaps, a big assumption, the already legendary Epic Fury will be at an end, and the highly effective Blockade will allow the Hormuz Strait to be OPEN TO ALL, including Iran. If they don't agree, the bombing starts, and it will be, sadly, at a much higher level and intensity than it was before," the president said on Truth Social Wednesday morning.
Trump didn't explain what he meant about "what has been agreed to."
This contradicts Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who on Tuesday said the war was "over."
There is now a one-page plan that would end the war while creating a 30-day negotiation period on resolving issues, a person familiar with the plan told CNN. Axios and The New York Times also reported on the one-page memo. Some of the sticking points include nuclear issues, unfreezing Iranian assets and opening the Strait of Hormuz, the source said.
The United States expects Iran to respond on several key points in the next 48 hours, Axios reported. The sources told Axios that this was the closest the parties had been to an agreement since the war started.
The source told CNN it would include discussion of a moratorium on uranium enrichment for more than 10 years. A previous proposal said 20 years.
The plan also demands that Iran ship its highly enriched uranium out of the country but the details were being negotiated.
Esmail Baghaei, Iran's foreign ministry spokesman, said Wednesday that the Iranian government was reviewing an American plan to end the war, The Times reported.
Baghaei said Iran hasn't responded to that proposal yet.
"After finalizing its considerations, Iran will convey its views to the Pakistani side," he said in an interview with news agency ISNA.
Trump announced a temporary pause to Project Freedom on Tuesday, less than 48 hours after the U.S. military began the operation to escort commercial and tanker vessels through the Iran-restricted Strait of Hormuz. Trump said in the statement posted on Truth Social that the pause could be dropped if Iran doesn't finalize a Pakistan-mediated agreement.
