PPP opens additional call for Seoul mayoral candidates
· UPIMarch 15 (Asia Today) -- South Korea's People Power Party said Sunday it will open an additional round of applications for its candidate in the upcoming Seoul mayoral race and urged incumbent Mayor Oh Se-hoon to take part.
The party's nomination committee said it plans to officially announce the additional call for candidates Monday.
"Seoul is the center of South Korean politics and the most symbolic battleground in this local election," the committee said in a statement. "We believe the nomination process for the Seoul mayoral candidate should be opened more broadly."
The committee specifically encouraged Oh, who has not yet formally registered for the race, to participate.
"Mayor Oh Se-hoon is a valuable asset to the party and a leader who has contributed significantly to the development of Seoul," the statement said.
The committee said the party highly values his achievements and role in city governance.
According to the schedule, the party will announce the additional nomination process Monday, accept applications Tuesday and conduct candidate interviews Wednesday.
