Why Birmingham Airport is being evacuated as passengers told 'stay away'

Passengers have been warned to stay away from Birmingham Airport after it was evacuated this afternoon (October 23). All operations at BHX are currently suspended amid a serious police incident.

A bomb disposal team was reportedly spotted been at the Solihull hub's terminal - but this information remains unverified. Other reports said passengers were not being allowed off flights.

West Midlands Police has since confirmed that the airport was evacuated following reports of a "suspicious vehicle". The force added: "This is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers and staff."

But the exact nature of the incident remains unclear. Bus services 97A, X1 and X12, which serve terminal stops, are being diverted.

A BHX spokesperson wrote on social media platform X: "WMP is currently on-site dealing with an incident. Airport operations are currently suspended.

"Passengers are advised to NOT come to the airport at this time. The Airport’s social media channels will be updated as and when the situation changes."
