Met Office issues snow and ice warning

Exact time snow expected in Midlands as Met Office issues 15-hour warning

by · Birmingham Live

Parts of the Midlands have been urged to brace for wintry conditions as the Met Office rolled out a yellow weather warning. The 15-hour alert for snow and ice covers a central swathe of the UK.

The alert comes into effect from 7pm this evening (Monday, November 18), through to 10am on Tuesday, November 19. Forecasters expect to see a period of rain, sleet and snow, with the "most likely scenario" seeing snow to accumulate on hills, with 5 to 10 cm possible above 200 metres.

There was said to be a "small chance" of it settling at lower levels, where 5 to 10 cm would prove much more disruptive, but this "remains very uncertain". The Met Office said there was a "small chance" the weather could result in power cuts and travel delays - including cancelled rail and air services. As rain, sleet and snow clear on Tuesday morning, ice may form on untreated surfaces.

Chief Meteorologist, Andy Page, said: “We have issued yellow warnings for snow and ice as cold weather moves in from the north. This brings snow showers and some ice to parts of Scotland on Sunday night, and then the potential for a spell of snow to lead to disruption to some transport routes across a central swathe of the UK on Tuesday morning. Gusty winds in the east also remain a potential hazard."

Although Birmingham and the Black Country were not covered by the weather warning, the Met Office was predicting 'heavy snow' for other parts of the Midlands, including Stoke-on-Trent. According to the latest forecast, it was expected to fall between 2am and 3am on Tuesday.
