Zungu's firm stance on SAFA elections result

Sandile Zungu has reiterated his stance on the results of the South African Football Association (SAFA) presidency election held in Gauteng last weekend, where he came out on the losing side.

The AmaZulu FC chairman lost to Dr. Danny Jordaan at the SAFA elective congress.

Jordaan, who received 157 votes, secured a fourth consecutive term by a landslide, comfortably defeating Zungu, who received 82 votes.

The 75-year-old’s new term will run until 2030.

However, leading up to the elections the businessman was not short of bravado to secure victory. 

"What I will not do now, is to shock and awe right now. Shock and awe is for Saturday, and trust me, shock and awe is for Saturday, not now," Zungu said on Roberts Marawa's Marawa Sports WorldWide a few days before the elective congress.

"Come Saturday when the results are announced, all I'm saying is that there has got to be an emergency vehicle on site because some elderly people may be pulsating dangerously at that time.

"It's just as serious as that. We are quite convinced, quite honestly, that we have the numbers."

Zungu accepts defeat

Speaking to this website post election, Zungu said he accepts the defeat and that he would not challenge the results in court.

"I have accepted the election result, and I'm not gonna contest legally," Zungu tells KickOff.

"So, the new leadership has got my best wishes; there's work to be done."

Asked if being a SAFA president remains his ambition, and if he will stand again in the near future, Zungu could not give much away.

"It's way too early to say," he responded.

Jordaan's last laugh

It was Jordaan who had the last laugh after the much-publicised elections. Speaking post elections, the long-standing president said last weekend’s elections demonstrates his effective leadership as boss of the mother body.

Jordaan contends that he has significantly contributed to the professional development of coaches nationwide by facilitating their acquisition of coaching qualifications.

"For the first time, you find South African coaches are now sought after in all African countries," Jordaan told the media this week, following his victory.

"We have coaches in Egypt, in Morocco, and these are two leading countries in the African continent.

"Banyana Banyana went to the Last 16 in the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. This is a massive achievement from where we started, from a zero base.

"So, when people talk... It is not true that nothing has happened in South African football.
