Funeral services announced for slain Metro officer Austin Abdelnabi

Funeral services have been announced for slain Metropolitan Police Department officer Austin “Zade” Abdelnabi.

A service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Central Church in Henderson, near East Russell Road and Boulder Highway, according to an obituary page posted by Palm Mortuary-Jones.

Abdelnabi, 30, was shot and killed Tuesday after responding to a call about a man who appeared intoxicated and was waving a firearm in the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue, according to police.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill said Abdelnabi, a Marine veteran, was ambushed as he was exiting his vehicle.

Police said Tuesday that officers found a suspect in the 5400 block of Mountain Vista Street, near Interstate 11, south of where the call originated. Metro said the suspect immediately opened fire on officers after they contacted him and that at least one officer returned fire.

Abdelnabi was rushed to University Medical Center where he died, police said. The suspect died at the scene.

A vigil for Abdelnabi organized by the Injured Police Officers Fund is scheduled to take place 7 p.m. Friday at Police Memorial Park, near West Cheyenne Avenue and the 215 Beltway.
