Celebrate Earth Day at Downtown Summerlin

by · Las Vegas Review-Journal

In Summerlin, every day is Earth Day. Developed by Howard Hughes Communities, Summerlin continues to prioritize sustainability through thoughtfully designed neighborhoods, low-water landscaping and a lifestyle that encourages outdoor living and community connection.

Built on a foundation established by the community’s original planners, who created a protective buffer to help preserve and expand the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Summerlin remains committed to caring for its natural surroundings. This Earth Day, April 22, that commitment takes center stage at Downtown Summerlin, with two days of engaging events, including the Giant Student Farmers Market and Tour de Summerlin.

On Earth Day, Downtown Summerlin will host the semiannual Giant Student Farmers Market organized by Green Our Planet, a local nonprofit that helps schools valley-wide plant and operate teaching gardens. Taking place on The Lawn from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., this free event is the country’s largest student-run farmers market, featuring fresh produce from as many as 60 school gardens across Southern Nevada.

More than 600 student “farmpreneuers” will be on hand to sell herbs, vegetables, fruits and crafts from their school gardens to the public, with all proceeds going to participating school garden programs.

While growing food, students also learn financial literacy skills and create business plans to carry out at the Giant Student Farmers Market. During the market, they’re matched with local Southern Nevada bankers who coach them through customer service and negotiation as they sell their produce and handmade crafts to the community.

In Summerlin, Green Our Planet is involved in helping several community schools with their gardens funded by Howard Hughes Communities.

On April 18, Tour de Summerlin, Southern Nevada’s longest-running cycling event and a USA Today top 10 cycling event in 2023 and 2024, returns to Downtown Summerlin. Presented by Howard Hughes Communities, Tour de Summerlin is expected to draw more than 750 cyclists.

Tour de Summerlin, celebrating its 25th year, offers three distances — 80 miles, 40 miles and 20 miles — catering to all skill levels. Considered one of Southern Nevadan’s most rider-friendly events, Tour de Summerlin is noncompetitive and untimed, focusing on camaraderie, safe cycling, outdoor activity and the scenic Summerlin community and its surroundings, including Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

The 80-mile route begins at 7 a.m.; the 40-mile route begins at 8:15 a.m.; and the 20-mile route begins at 9:15 a.m. All bike types, including e-bikes, are permitted. All registered participants will receive a 25th anniversary commemorative T-shirt and medal. Registration fees are $130.06 for all routes, and $22.51 for the 20-mile course for those ages 15 and under. Individuals 15 and younger must be accompanied by an adult on the 20-mile course. Information and registration can be found at tourdesummerlin.com.

Danielle Bisterfeldt, senior vice president, marketing and consumer experience for Summerlin, said Tour de Summerlin was originally created to showcase the community’s beauty, offering cyclists scenic routes through Summerlin’s new-home neighborhoods and stunning views of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area to the west.

“Whether you’re a serious cyclist or just enjoy getting out on a bike, each route offers plenty of bike lanes, beautiful scenery and unique riding experiences,” Bisterfeldt said. “Summerlin has long been synonymous with cycling given its proximity to Red Rock Canyon and the community’s 200-plus-mile trail system. Tour de Summerlin is a natural fit for our community, and we look forward to welcoming cyclists from across the valley for this fun event, which has become a signature tradition for our community.”

Summerlin, in its 36th year of development, offers more amenities than any other Southern Nevada community. They include 10 golf courses; 26 public, private and charter schools; Roseman University College of Medicine; a public library and performing arts center; Summerlin Hospital Medical Center; more than a dozen houses of worship representing multiple faiths; office parks and neighborhood shopping centers.

Downtown Summerlin offers fashion, dining, entertainment, Red Rock Resort and office buildings. City National Arena is home of the Vegas Golden Knights’ practice facility. The Las Vegas Ballpark is a world-class Triple-A baseball stadium and home of the Las Vegas Aviators.

Summerlin offers over 115 floor plans in 20-plus neighborhoods throughout six distinct villages and districts. Homes, built by many of the nation’s top homebuilders, are available in a variety of styles — from single-family homes to townhomes, priced from the $400,000s to more than $1 million.

For information on all actively selling neighborhoods, visit Summerlin.com. Before you visit, call the builders for their hours of operation. Phone numbers for each neighborhood are listed on the website.
