World Gymnaestrada headed to Las Vegas in 2031
by Mick Akers / Las Vegas Review-Journal · Las Vegas Review-JournalLas Vegas has landed the largest gymnastics event in the world, with the 2031 World Gymnaestrada set to be hosted at multiple venues in Southern Nevada.
Announced Tuesday at the World Gymnastics Executive Committee and Council meeting in Egypt, the event is slated to see over 20,000 athletes from 50 nations take part in noncompetitive gymnastics events. The 2031 edition of World Gymnaestrada will be the first time the event will be held outside of Europe, according to the news release.
World Gymnaestrada will be held July 7-13, 2031, at several venues and locations including T-Mobile Arena, MGM Grand Garden Arena, the Las Vegas Convention Center, Fremont Street, Mandalay Beach, Mystere Theatre, Michael Jackson ONE Theatre and Westgate.
The event includes gymnastics performances by people of all ages and abilities, with a focus on group performances, some featuring hundreds of people.
“USA Gymnastics is honored and excited to bring the biggest and most inclusive gymnastics event in the world to Las Vegas,” USA Gymnastics president and CEO Kyle Albrecht said in a statement. “Growing and providing increased access to the sport of gymnastics is one of the strategic focuses of our organization — and what better way is there to elevate that mission than hosting the World Gymnaestrada.”
Las Vegas awarded the event from a field of finalists that included Helsinki, Finland and Antwerp, Belgium.
“It is a privilege to welcome the world of gymnastics to Las Vegas, and we are confident our city and partners will deliver an exceptional experience for participants, families and visitors from around the globe,” Janis Burke, chief sports officer of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, said in a statement.
