Police: Pedestrian, 80, killed in Las Vegas crash; driver showed signs of impairment

An 80-year-old pedestrian was killed in a crash involving a driver who showed signs of impairment early Friday morning in the east Las Vegas Valley, according to police.

The Metropolitan Police Department said in a news release that the crash occurred at about 5:17 a.m. on East Cedar Avenue west of North Eastern Avenue.

Evidence at the scene, video surveillance and witness statements indicate that a 2017 Nissan Titan was traveling westbound on East Cedar Avenue when the vehicle struck a pedestrian who was crossing Cedar Avenue outside of a marked or implied crosswalk.

The pedestrian was transported to University Medical Center’s Trauma Center, where he later died.

The driver of the Nissan, identified by police as Jessica Cortez, 38, remained at the scene and showed signs of impairment, according to a police statement. It did not say if she was taken into custody.
