LETTER: The importance of open government

by · Las Vegas Review-Journal

The March 22 editorial on government secrecy highlights the critical role that transparency plays in sustaining public trust. Citizens place confidence in public agencies and officials to act in the best interests of society, and it is essential that this trust be upheld.

Timely and meaningful access to public records is a key component of that accountability, offering reassurance that governmental actions are conducted openly and without concealment. Unnecessary delays or obstacles in fulfilling such requests can undermine confidence and invite skepticism (which has sometimes been justified).

Providing voters with greater clarity regarding how officials respond to transparency efforts may help foster a more informed electorate, enabling the public to better understand who is advancing — or hindering — the principles of open and democratic governance.
