Quail Springs wildfire grows to 13K acres with zero containment

A wildfire on withdrawn lands of the Nevada Test and Training Range has grown to 13,500 acres without containment, the Bureau of Land Management’s Nevada office said in a release Wednesday.

The Quail Springs Fire in Lincoln County experienced significant growth again Tuesday, primarily due to hot and dry winds, rough terrain, high temps and low relative humidities, the agency said. Firefighters are utilizing indirect and direct suppression strategies and tactics.

The U.S. Air Force, U.S. Wildland Fire Service and the Lincoln County Emergency Management Department are the agencies responding.

Steep, rough terrain and extreme fire behavior are making direct suppression strategies difficult.

The fire is progressing mostly to the north. As the fire moves out of steep terrain, crews are having success in suppressing those areas.

The fire is expected to increase activity Wednesday afternoon, with reduced activity overnight.

There have been no calls for evacuations, and no publicly accessible structures are threatened.

The nearby community of Rachel, nearly 150 miles north of Las Vegas, might be affected by smoke but is not threatened.
