Man, 31, shot dead by North Las Vegas police after crash ID’d
by Trevor Squire / Las Vegas Review-Journal · Las Vegas Review-JournalThe Clark County coroner’s office identified the man killed by North Las Vegas police after a car crash last week.
According to the coroner’s office, Khalil Smith, 31, died of multiple gun shot wounds, ruling his manner of death as a homicide.
Police responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of East Gowan Road and North 5th Street just after 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, the North Las Vegas Police Department said in a news release that day.
Responding officers received initial reports that a man, now identified as Smith, involved in the collision was “acting in a threatening manner was reported to be armed with a sharp object,” the release said.
“When officers arrived, a man was on the roof of a vehicle, acting erratically,” police said. “Officers issued numerous commands in an attempt to de-escalate the situation, but the man did not comply.”
Officers told Smith to drop the object and to get down from the vehicle, police said. Smith jumped down and “ran toward an officer while brandishing the sharp object” before officers fired, striking Smith, according to the release.
Smith was taken to University Medical Center, where he died. Police said one officer suffered a minor injury.
This was the department’s first officer-involved shooting in 2026, which is still under investigation. The department had not named the officers as of Monday afternoon.
