An explosion and garage fire seriously injured one man and did significant damage to a two-story Henderson home on Wednesday, according to the Henderson Fire Department.

Henderson Fire Chief Scott Vivier said firefighters and Henderson police responded to an 11:30 am. call about a structure fire in the 900 block of Calville Estates Court near East Athens Avenue.

Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed there had been an explosion in the garage and that the homes sprinkler system was activated. The cause of the explosion was unknown.

There were six people in the residence at the time of the fire, two adults and four children, including one infant, as well as two dogs. One man was taken to a local area hospital with serious injuries, according to Vivier. All others that were in the home were safely evacuated, he said.

One police officer went to the hospital due to smoke inhalation, according to the Fire Department.

Four engines initially responded to the fire, but more were dispatched to deal with the situation.

The department reported that three to four homes, a nearby shopping mall and other businesses in the area were evacuated as a precautionary measure. The evacuation order was lifted once the fire was contained.

Vivier said the damage to the home is significant and the home is not habitable.

No other structures or homes were reported damaged.

The cause of the explosion and fire remains under investigation.
