Las Vegas judge to sentence man who fatally shot Metro officer in 2022

A man who pleaded guilty to killing a Metropolitan Police Department officer is scheduled to be sentenced Monday.

Tyson Hampton, 28, pleaded guilty but mentally ill in May to dozens of counts, including murder, attempted murder and discharging a firearm from or within a structure.

Hampton previously faced the death penalty, but prosecutors agreed not to seek it in exchange for his plea.

In 2022, Hampton fatally shot Officer Truong Thai, who was responding to a domestic violence call.
