An inmate at a Southern Nevada prison died last month, state corrections officials announced Monday.

Joseph Newman, 53, died at High Desert State Prison on April 1, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections. High Desert State Prison is located southeast of Indian Springs.

Newman was serving a one- to two-and-a-half year sentence for grand larceny of a motor vehicle and entered the Nevada Department of Corrections on Feb. 17, officials said.

Corrections officials did not provide Newman’s cause of death, but said an autopsy has been requested. Attempts to contact Newman’s next-of-kin have been unsuccessful, the department said.
