Dallas ISD officer critically wounded in shooting outside North Dallas Walmart

One person is in custody after a Dallas ISD police officer was critically wounded in a shooting late Thursday morning outside a Walmart and Sam's Club in North Dallas, sources confirm to NBC 5.

Dallas Police responded to a call to assist an officer with an ambulance outside the Walmart and Sam's Club at Midway and LBJ Freeway just before 11 a.m.

Dallas Chief of Police Daniel Comeaux and Dallas ISD Chief of Police Albert Martinez both said early Thursday afternoon that Dallas ISD officer Justin Jones was flagged down on the highway by a person in crisis. Jones drove the person from the highway to the Walmart parking lot, and after the person got out of the police SUV, the shooting occurred. It's not clear what happened in the moments before the shooting that led to the gunfire.

Martinez said Jones is in critical condition after being shot at least once in the lower torso and was in surgery. Jones said another ISD police officer provided first aid and applied a tourniquet before Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedics took Jones to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.

Jones is 39, has been with the Dallas ISD Police Department for 16 years and is assigned to White High School.

Texas Sky Ranger flew over the store Thursday morning, where part of the parking lot had been cordoned off, and several Dallas ISD police vehicles were stopped.

A number of police officers are searching through bushes and landscaping around the store, the alley, and the neighborhood along Flintridge Drive immediately behind the buildings.

Dallas Police are also investigating a shooting involving an officer in a nearby neighborhood. Police confirmed to NBC 5 that the shootings are not related.
