Remains found in Grand Canyon ID'd as Timothy Smith, last hiker missing after flood

The Granbury native was the last of three friends unaccounted for after the deadly Aug. 29 disaster.

The remains found earlier this week in the Grand Canyon have been identified as Timothy Smith — a husband, father, pilot, and the last of the hikers lost to last month's deadly flash flood.

The identification marks the end of a weeklong search for Smith, who had been missing since the Aug. 29 disaster took hold at Bright Angel Creek, the end point of the park's most popular hike. The National Park Service said his remains were found Monday along the Colorado River, about 10 miles downstream.

Smith's wife of 18 years, Carrie Smith, confirmed the news Thursday on Facebook: "We no longer have to wait. Tim was found two days ago by the Rangers at Grand Canyon National Park. Not in the way we hoped, but we know that he was doing something he loved with John and Brent."

Smith had traveled to the canyon with two close friends, John Giusti, 46, and Brent Rosenkranz, 42, for what they hoped would be a days-long, dream trip.
