Oak Lawn Library Branch to receive donor-funded mural

Governor Greg Abbott ordered the removal of decorative crosswalks last year

The Oak Lawn Library Branch is getting a new mural after the neighborhood's rainbow crosswalk was removed.

In October, Governor Greg Abbott directed all cities and counties to remove any “political ideologies” from their streets. In a statement, the Governor said, "Texans expect their taxpayer dollars to be used wisely, not advance political agendas on Texas roadways.”

In April, the Dallas Department of Arts and Culture sought ideas and feedback from residents for alternatives to display art and community pride.

During the community engagement sessions, attendees were invited to submit ideas while taking note of what other cities have done.

The city of San Antonio unveiled pride sidewalks in response.

The Oak Lawn mural will live on the four exterior columns facing the library parking lot.

The selected artists, Will Heron in collaboration with Sam Lao, are well‑established local muralists.

The city is also considering painting the steps at the front entrance of the library, facing the road, similar to Oak Lawn United Methodist Church.
