A man who shot at a Grand Prairie police officer from a disabled stolen vehicle is recovering after the officer returned fire, striking him at least once.

Grand Prairie Police said officers were called to a family disturbance at a home on Dechman Drive at about 8 p.m. Saturday after a woman said her ex-boyfriend came to her house and stole her car.

Police identified the man as 30-year-old Mark Williams, of Grimes, and said he led them on a short chase in the woman's car until the vehicle became disabled. Police said Williams then fired on the officer with an AR-15 rifle, hitting the officer's patrol car.

"The officer returned fire, striking the suspect, who then surrendered," police said.

Grand Prairie police officers provided Williams with first aid until fire department medics arrived and took him to the hospital. The severity of Williams's injuries is not known, but police said he's expected to survive.

The officer was not injured in the shooting.

Grand Prairie Police said Williams was wanted on multiple felony charges and has additionally been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer. More charges are expected to be filed.

The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Officer‐Involved Shooting Team is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting. The Grand Prairie Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards will be conducting a concurrent administrative investigation.
