New details have emerged surrounding a 24-year-old murder case that had gone cold until this year. Plano resident Frank Weiss was found dead near Lake Lewisville in 2002.

This month, 55-year-old Lisa Honrud was arrested for Weiss’s murder. She was his wife at the time of his death.

NBC 5 obtained a copy of an affidavit, and, for the first time, we’re learning about the days and months leading up to his disappearance and murder.

The document states Weiss was shot by a .38 caliber firearm, and his body was found in June of 2002 in Lake Lewisville wrapped in black bags, tied up with rope, and weighted down with sandbags duct taped to his legs.

It goes on to say Weiss and Lisa Honrud went to dinner just two days before his body was found and it was the last time he had been seen alive.

Detectives learned Frank Weiss had asked for an annulment, which Lisa signed.

In the days after his disappearance, detectives said Lisa told Weiss’s daughter he’d gone to Cancun and didn’t want to be bothered.

Investigators said that a little over a month before his death, Weiss had submitted a change of beneficiary for his life insurance, naming his daughter Carla as the sole beneficiary. It was unclear though whether Lisa knew about the modification.

Fast forward to present day. Investigators said significant progress was made in the 24-year-old homicide thanks to new information from a key witness, along with advancements in investigative techniques and modern technology.

The case was reopened and the witness told detectives that after learning Weiss had been murdered with a .38 caliber, he confronted Lisa Honrud regarding the revolver he’d given her.

The affidavit said Lisa told the witnesss, “we got rid of it” by throwing it off the bridge over Joe Pool Lake.

Following Lisa Honrud’s arrest, Weiss’s daughter, Carla Weiss, released a statement that said in part:

“My dad was a wonderful man, the kind of guy who put me on his shoulders for three hours to ride the pink dumbo because no other color would do. The kind of guy who DJ’d my 16th birthday party and all my friends knew as Daddy Frank. He deserved better than this and we deserved to have him in our life a lot longer than we did.”

Frank Weiss was described as a respected, loved businessman and veteran who had no known enemies.

His daughter also told NBC 5 she believes others may have been involved in his murder.
