A Dallas police officer was hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after a vehicle struck the officer’s patrol vehicle during a traffic stop on Marvin D. Love Freeway.

Dallas Police told NBC 5 the officer was stopped at about 3:52 p.m. in the 6200 block of northbound U.S. Highway 67 for a traffic stop and was standing outside their police car when a passing vehicle struck both the officer and the patrol vehicle.

The department said the officer was taken to the hospital for a precautionary evaluation. The driver of the vehicle that struck the police car was also hospitalized. The conditions of both patients were unknown.

No other injuries have been reported.

NBC 5's Texas Sky Ranger flew over the scene Wednesday afternoon and spotted at least four damaged vehicles, including a Dallas police SUV, a blue sedan on its side, and two other midsize SUVs being loaded onto a tow truck.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and it is unclear whether the vehicle stopped by the police was involved in the collision.

Traffic in the northbound lanes between Red Bird Lane and Hampton Road is backed up south of Interstate 20 to Cockrell Hill Road.

This is the second incident this week where a driver crashed into a police vehicle in North Texas. On Sunday, a Kaufman County sheriff’s deputy and a Forney police officer escaped serious injury when a passing vehicle slammed into the officer’s patrol car while they were working a call on a freeway.

In that incident, Kaufman County officials said the crash served as a stark reminder of the state’s Move Over or Slow Down law, which requires drivers to move over or slow down for stopped emergency vehicles.
