Armed man killed by Melissa Police responding to disturbance call
Officer placed on leave while routine internal and criminal investigations are undertaken.
by Frank Heinz · 5 NBCDFWA Melissa police officer is on leave after police say they fatally shot an armed man while responding to a disturbance Sunday night.
Melissa Police said officers were called to a home on the 2600 block of E. Melissa Road at about 11:30 p.m. and that when they arrived, they "encountered a situation involving an armed individual and another occupant" and that "an officer discharged his firearm during the incident."
The armed man, who has not yet been publicly identified, was injured in the gunfire and was given first aid before being taken to a hospital. Police said the man later died from his injuries.
No other injuries were reported and police did not reveal any other information about what led to the disturbance.
Melissa Police said the officer is on routine administrative leave while the department conducts an internal investigation. The Texas Rangers have assumed responsibility for a separate criminal investigation into the shooting.
Due to the ongoing investigation, police said no other information is being released at this time.
