If your New Year's resolution is to exercise more or get outdoors, start 2026 on the right foot with a First Day Hike.

First Day Hikes is a nationwide program to encourage hiking on New Year's Day, according to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.

The annual tradition that gives people of all ages and skill levels a chance to experience the beauty of Texas nature through ranger and self-guided walks, bike rides, paddling trips, polar plunges and more.

“Each year, Texas leads the nation as thousands of Texans turn out to a nearby state park to ring in the new year and celebrate with a First Day Hike. I always look forward to seeing the photos of smiling folks enjoying parks on January 1, and this New Year’s Day is extra special as we also ring in America’s 250th birthday. Hope to see you on the trail!” said Rodney Franklin, director of Texas State Parks.

If you want to start your year with a clean slate, Dinosaur Valley State Park is hosting its 10th annual Dino Dive!

"It is a little cold, but it's an experience like no other, because you are jumping into the new year right next to dinosaur tracks of the past," said Park Interpreter Laney Kohout.

Visitors can take a plunge in the cold, clear waters of the Paluxy River at 2 p.m. Sign up for the anniversary medal here.

Park officials at Dinosaur Valley say the first day of the year is the park's busiest day of the year and recommend buying a day pass in advance.

"By supporting the park on this day, you're not just coming out to dinosaur valley for the new year. You are helping us fund our projects and support our park for the rest of the year," Kohout said. "So we truly appreciate everybody who comes out, who participates and who spends the first day of 2026 with us."

Trails at Texas State Parks vary in length and difficulty. Trail maps for all Texas State Parks can be found on TPWD's website.

TPWD reminds everyone to bring water and salty snacks, wear proper shoes and appropriate clothing when going for hike.
