Letter to the editor: How DSAs candidate could legally be seated in Congress
· The Washington TimesOPINION:
In a recent column, Tom Basile says that Democrats backed by the Democratic Socialists of America “cannot legally take the oath” (“DSA-backed candidates cannot legally be seated in Congress, Web, July 30”).
But his contention that “[t]here is no legal mechanism to advance the [DSA] agenda” is wrong.
The Constitution’s Article V specifically provides two ways it can be changed. Congress can propose an amendment or there can be a constitutional convention. Any other way would be blatantly unconstitutional.
Mr. Basile makes a clear case against the DSA proposals and I strongly agree with him.
While he is wrong regarding changing the Constitution, he is correct that anyone elected to Congress should not be seated if they cannot support the Constitution as written, or if they advocate for its change in any way other than by following Article V mechanisms.
