Letter to the editor: Fight for our republic — or risk losing it
· The Washington TimesOPINION:
The political left’s attacks on America are part of a broader effort to destroy the West.
The organization Columbia University Apartheid Divest, co-founded by the presumptive next congresswoman of New York’s 13th District, Darializa Avila Chevalier, has said that it is “fighting for the total eradication of Western civilization.”
America, the leader of the West, is under intense pressure internally and externally. Much of the media, education, government bureaucracy and many of the cities eagerly support the subversive forces. President Trump has said communism represents “a mortal threat to American liberty.”
What is to be done? I believe we have two options.
We could fight back against the communists living in America while following the Constitution. It’s a kind of Fabian tactic in the hope that eventually the poison will wear out. But it could be overly optimistic to believe the chiliastic zealots on the left will not hang around waiting for an opportunity to assume power.
Alternatively, we could fight back more aggressively. We could go after the entire support structure of the left — the education system, the media, the government bureaucracy, the corrupt election administration, the funding and the once-great cities of America now in shambles.
This would be an enormous task and the left would use every legal device and measure to delay and block the undertaking, hiding behind the Constitution until it could seize power.
The better path is probably suspending the Constitution, imposing martial law and activate presidential emergency powers. The temporary government must be carefully crafted.

We must consider the possibility that the left has raised the stakes so high, our republic could be lost. The courage of the Framers is now needed. If we do not have it, the Constitution and our freedom will be a memory.
