Navy searching for Marine who went missing from USS Anchorage off coast of California
by Ben Wolfgang · The Washington TimesThe Navy is searching for a Marine who went missing from the ship USS Anchorage off the coast of California late last week, Pentagon officials said in a statement late Saturday.
Navy officials said the effort has transitioned from a search-and-rescue operation to a search-and-recovery mission, meaning it is believed that the missing service member is likely dead.
Officials said the Marine, who was not identified, went missing during integrated training between the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group.
The military launched an exhaustive, multi-day search.
“The search and rescue operation involved an integrated response by the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Air Force that spanned approximately 2,400 square miles over the course of 43 hours using three surface ships and 12 aircraft,” the Navy’s Third Fleet said in a statement.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all who are affected during this difficult time,” the statement said.
The 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit is based at California’s Camp Pendleton.
