Mirror, mirror off the wall: Maryland school removes bathroom reflectors to thwart trouble
by Brad Matthews · The Washington TimesThe administration at Montgomery Blair High School has removed most of the mirrors in the school’s bathrooms to deter students from congregating at them.
In addition to being tardy due to bathroom meetups, students kept using the lavatories to “share or sell substances, roll dice, conduct transactions, and occasionally fight,” the Maryland school’s principal, Damon Monteleone, told its community in a message cited by Washington’s WTOP-FM, adding that flushed vapes and smoking paraphernalia have damaged the school’s plumbing.
Initially, the school moved the mirrors to the hallway walls. After meeting with the student government, the administration relented and put some of them back into the school’s various restrooms.

Mr. Monteleone told the radio station that “having access to the mirror on the outside of the bathroom really eliminates any reason to be in the bathroom, other than using the actual facilities or washing your hands.”
He said the school wanted to remove the incentive for kids to use the bathrooms for hanging out.
Blair students who need mirrors to adjust their hijabs have retained access to separate facilities in the school’s main office, counseling suite and in two specific rooms, according to the email sent to students as posted on social media.
