China formally accepts Trump’s invite for Xi visit to White House
by Tom Howell Jr. · The Washington TimesChina says President Xi Jinping has officially accepted President Trump’s invitation to visit Washington this fall.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi confirmed the trip on Friday in remarks to the press after Mr. Trump’s high-stakes visit to Beijing and meetings on Mr. Xi’s turf.
Mr. Wang “called on the two sides to work together to make thorough preparations for the interactions and exchanges between the two heads of state, foster a favorable atmosphere and build up more outcomes,” according to Xinhua, a state-affiliated media outlet.
Mr. Trump on Friday wrapped up a two-day visit in Beijing to discuss trade, Taiwan, Iran and other matters with Mr. Xi.
During the stay, Mr. Trump invited Mr. Xi to the White House for a visit on Sept. 24. The Chinese confirmation did not cite a date, though it did say “autumn.”
Mr. Trump said he was impressed by China’s facilities during a grand banquet in his honor. The U.S. president is constructing a large ballroom at the White House, though it will not be ready in time to host Mr. Xi.
“China has a Ballroom, and so should the U.S.A.! It’s under construction, ahead of schedule, and will be the finest facility of its kind anywhere in the U.S.A.,” Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social. “Thank you for all the support I have been given in getting this project going. Scheduled opening will be around September of 2028.”
Democrats have panned the ballroom as a vanity project that destroyed the traditional East Wing of the White House and raised financial questions. They say private donors to the ballroom project might be trying to buy influence at the White House.

Democrats also objected to the Secret Service’s request for $220 million to complete security features for the project.
Trump allies counter that such security is crucial, especially after the Washington Hilton assassination attempt last month.
