A Warrant Officer Class II (WO II) of the Fourth Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces has been arrested in the Ashanti Region over allegations of supplying sophisticated weapons to criminal gangs operating in the area.

The suspect, identified as WO II David Kofi Brew, was arrested following an undercover operation by security investigators who posed as potential buyers interested in acquiring firearms.

According to sources familiar with the operation, the investigators were contacted by the suspect and directed to meet him at the Bekwai Shell filling station, where the weapons were ready for collection.

Brew was arrested at the location while attempting to hand over the weapons to the supposed buyers in exchange for GHS 80,000.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted to selling weapons to individuals in and around Obuasi, an area that has in recent times recorded incidents of armed criminal activity.

Security agencies have since launched a manhunt for possible accomplices, believed to be members of criminal networks terrorising residents across parts of the Ashanti Region.

The arrest has raised serious concerns about how the suspect allegedly obtained the weapons, given his position within the Ghana Armed Forces.

While investigations are ongoing, authorities have not yet disclosed whether the arms were diverted from military stockpiles or sourced through external criminal channels.

Military and security officials say determining the origin of the weapons is a key focus of the investigation, as it has significant implications for national security and internal controls within the armed forces.

Residents and civil society groups have expressed shock over the allegations, calling for a thorough probe and strict punishment if the claims are proven in court.
