Angry Texas Man Wearing MAGA hat Attacks Elderly Election Worker

· NewsTalk 1290

A disgruntled 63-year old Texas voter wearing a MAGA hat was thrown in jail after physically beating an elderly elections worker.

63-year-old, Jesse Lutzenberger, arrived at the Johnston Branch Library in San Antonio, Texas to vote. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar stated that Lutzenberger was wearing a Make America Great Again (MAGA) hat as he entered the building.

In Texas, it’s illegal to wear or display items that show support for a candidate within 100 feet of a polling place in order to keep the area neutral to ensure people aren’t influenced by others’ political choices.

Under this law:

• Items like T-shirts, hats, or buttons with a candidate’s name or slogan are not allowed.

• The rule applies to any support for a candidate, party, or ballot measure.

A worker at the polling location noticed Lutzenberger hat and asked him to remove it. Lutzenberger complied and proceeded to enter the polling area and vote; however, once he finished voting, he put his cap back on.

The elections worker noticed and asked Lutzenberger once again to remove his hat as he began to escort him out. This time  the 63-year-old’s emotions flipped a switch and he began to punch the elderly worker in the face and chest, deputies said.

After assaulting the 69-year-old election worker, Lutzenberger walked out of the building and left the area. The worker received treatment onsite by Emergency Medical Service and sustained a scratch on his cheek, the sheriff’s office report stated.

Not soon after the attack, police were able to identify Lutzenberger and deputies drove up to his home. Sheriff Salazar said that the man came outside and state he was the one they are looking for.

Lutzenberger was charged with injury to the elderly with a $30,000 bond, however according to records, he was released from the Bexar County Adult Detention Center at 11:48 p.m. Friday.

Officials are urging people to be mindful of the laws during this voting season.

“You may see some voters that aren’t happy ... but we need to remain within the law so that no one is intimidated and everyone can come and vote freely,” Bexar County Elections Administrator Jacque Callanen said.
