Court extends detention by 90 days for man suspected of Amsterdam murder of Hajar

The man suspected of killing 29-year-old Haiar from Amsterdam will remain in custody for another 90 days, after which he will have a pro forma hearing. The pre-trial chamber of the court has decided to extend his detention for now.

The suspect, a 23-year-old status holder of Somali origin, is also suspected of attempting to kill his foster father. This is alleged to have taken place in the municipality of Koggenland in Noord-Holland.

Hajar had been missing since October 4. She was allegedly likely killed that day in an anti-squat property in Amsterdam’s Buitenveldert neighborhood. She was earlier seen cycling away with a man. Almost two weeks after she first disappeared, her body was found in a suitcase in the water along the Amsteldijk.

The suspect was arrested several days after the body was found and had since been held under restrictions. This meant he was only allowed contact with his lawyer. As a result, the police and the Public Prosecution Service (OM) were reluctant to share information. Those restrictions no longer apply as of Monday.
