Former Tata Steel worker alleges toxic smoke, dangerous conditions
A former Tata Steel coke-plant worker spent more than three hours with detectives in Beverwijk, describing a workplace where production was expected to continue “at all cost.” The worker also described toxic smoke and leaking installations. “It was sometimes strange and dangerous.”
The questioning was done as a part of the investigation by the Public Prosecution Service, which is being assisted by the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate. The probe focuses on the possible deliberate and illegal emission of harmful substances, according to IJmuider Courant.
Earlier this year, it was decided to prosecute the firm. The case followed a criminal complaint filled by lawyer Bénédicte Ficq on behalf of many thousands of nearby residents.
The company is being taken to court. The executives could also face trial and risk years in prison.
During the interrogation, the former employee described a work culture in which, in his view, production always had to continue. Technical improvments and maintenance were regularly postponed as a result.
