Participant dies during Leiden Marathon
A participant died during the Leiden Marathon, police confirmed to RTL, prompting the cancellation of multiple races and a large emergency response, including a trauma helicopter and mass deployment of emergency services.
A police spokesperson told RTL that no investigation will be conducted because the case is considered a “health issue." Police said it is still unclear what exactly happened, and the authorities have not disclosed the identity of the deceased participant.
The marathon features multiple distances, but it is not yet known which race the deceased participant was taking part in.
According to regional broadcaster Omroep West, the 10-kilometer race and the Kidsrun, both scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., were canceled following the incident.
