A police officer shot and wounded a person at about 9:25 p.m. Saturday on the Simpelhuisstraat in central Middelburg, Zeeland, Omroep Zeeland reports. The victim was transported to a hospital by ambulance. Authorities have not released details on the identity of the person or the cause of the shooting. The Rijksrecherche is investigating the shooting, which is standard when a police shooting is involved.

According to HV Zeeland, the person was shot in the leg, but police officials said they cannot confirm that.

The Simpelhuisstraat was sealed off with police tape following the incident. Witnesses were urged to come forward and report what they saw or heard. A police spokesperson told RTL Nieuws that it is still unknown how seriously the victim was injured.

Police said there were a lot of people in the city center at the time. Multiple people reported hearing the gunfire in Middelburg, where many residents and visitors were in cafés and outside after watching the football match between the Netherlands and Sweden.
