The victim in the Weiteveen double-murder case filmed her own death

Shocking video footage of one of two murders carried out by Richard K. in 2024 was shown in a Leeuwarden courtroom on Monday at the start of a three-day appellate hearing. The 53-year-old was convicted and sentenced to life for killing Ineke, 44, and Sam, 39, a couple with whom K. had a long-running property dispute. The woman captured her last moments on a video of the argument as it spiraled out of control on Jan. 16 of that year.

In court, at the request of the Public Prosecution Service (OM), the Court of Appeal showed a video of the murder that Ineke had filmed herself in her last moments. According to RTL, the video shows K. in his car blocking Ineke on Bargerweg, after which she honked repeatedly. K. then got out of the car and fired a revolver. The video then shows broken glass, after which Ineke dropped the phone.

“At that moment, I wanted the honking to stop. It drove me completely crazy,” K. responded in court. “Does that mean I intended to kill her? I don't know. It might have been the case at some point; that's possible, but I don't remember it."

"I fired four times; how can I miss three times at such a short distance? How can a skilled marksman shoot so badly? What I mean by that is that I probably never intended to hit her,” K. continued. “I just wanted the honking to stop. 15 seconds, 15 seconds."

After shooting Ineke, K. then drove to Ineke and Sam’s house. The whole conflict between the three centered on the house, which was reportedly sold to Ineke and Sam by K. without disclosing the place’s defects.

"Where is your father? Where is your father? Your mother has had an accident; she is standing against a tree!" K. reportedly yelled to the victims’ then 12-year-old son upon arrival.

Security camera footage then showed Sam fleeing the house injured after K. had forced his way into it. The son then called 112 in panic.

K. was asked in court if he wanted to lure Sam out of the house at first. The suspect answered that, looking back, that sounds logical. "But at that moment itself, I don't know."

K. was asked why he also had to kill Sam after having already murdered Ineke. "I cannot answer the why. To me, it was one action, one moment where everything happened and where I lost a piece of the film.”

K. has been sentenced to life in prison for the double murder in 2025. The court said it believes K. had a premeditated plan to kill the married couple. The suspect denied having that intention in court. “On the inside, I am a wreck," K. said in court. “This is my last chance. The truth must be established.”

In a livestream video reviewed by NL Times, which is believed to have been taken after the murders, K. appeared to be hysterical. "I will not allow my son to be killed, my mother to be killed, my wife to be raped. They have threatened me so many times. They always destroy everything in our house. We have done nothing in return, absolutely nothing."
