Five arrests made, over 200 fines issued after traffic inspection at Erasmus Bridge

A major joint enforcement crackdown at the foot of the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam concluded with police issuing 214 fines and making five arrests last week, they reported on Monday. The multi-agency operation targeted dangerous driving, traffic safety, and noise violations.

The inspection took place at the foot of the Erasmus Bridge, at the intersection by Wilhelminakade, NOS reported. The Erasmus Bridge is a notorious bottleneck for high-speed bicycle lane traffic between North and South Rotterdam. The Rotterdam Municipality and police ordered this sweeping action after receiving a high volume of complaints from locals regarding severe nuisance and unsafe behavior.

The police worked with the Netherlands Labour Authority and the Aliens Police. A total of 214 fines were issued, and five arrests were made. The arrests were made for drug possession, receiving/handling stolen goods, and one person was arrested because officers found out that there was still an open prison sentence against the suspect.

Police seized six fatbikes and e-steps. They specifically checked for excessive exhaust noise. Nine drivers were fined 500 euros each because their vehicles' exhausts produced too much noise.

Because the Labour Inspectorate participated, officials were also cracking down on food delivery fraud, actively checking if couriers were illegally using identity accounts belonging to other people, or if there were elements of labor exploitation happening within local delivery services.

The operation comes amid increased Dutch enforcement and proposed regulation around fatbikes and other light electric vehicles. The Cabinet announced plans in April 2026 for a minimum age for fatbikes, a legal basis for fatbike-free zones and a helmet requirement for people under 18 using light electric vehicles such as e-bikes and e-steps. It also said customs would increase checks on illegally imported fatbikes.
