Dutch police seize 3,000 kilograms of illegal fireworks, arrest 33-year-old man
On Wednesday, October 21, police seized approximately 3,000 kilograms of illegal fireworks on Werfweg in Lelystad, the officers reported. A 33-year-old man was arrested as a suspect after an anonymous tip.
Possession, purchasing, or setting off fireworks has been a criminal offense since August 1. The explosives in question contained a large quantity of highly explosive flash powder. “Storing such quantities of fireworks poses serious risks to local residents and passers-by,” the police wrote.
The action was taken immediately following the tip. After which, “we discovered a large quantity of fireworks in a commercial building on Werfweg. In addition, several kilograms of fireworks were seized from the suspect’s home.”
“Fireworks stored in homes, garage units, or commercial buildings can be life-threatening and are prohibited,” police stated. “Our aim in detecting and seizing fireworks is to actively contribute to a safer New Year’s Eve for the public, all emergency services, and our colleagues working on the streets that night.”
The suspect is now in custody as the investigation is ongoing. Police asked to report if one suspects that fireworks are being stored, traded, or transported somewhere. People can call 0900-8844 or 0800-7000 if they wish to remain anonymous.
