Victim confronted suspect about loose dog prior to fatal shooting in Amsterdam-Noord

According to the witnesses, prior to the deadly shooting near the NDSM ferry dock in Amsterdam-Noord, the suspect and the victim had argued over a loose dog, after which violence broke out. “It all happened so fast,” a witness told NOS. It was earlier reported that one person is in custody and that the victim worked at a prison in Zaanstad, Westland.

“The victim confronted the man because his dog was running loose and barking loudly,” a witness told Het Parool. “He walked back and forth a few times. We thought there would be a fight, but then shots were fired.”

Police have confirmed that the two had argued prior to the shooting, which took place after 3:05 p.m. on Friday. “The victim was sitting on the terrace when the argument started,” police told NOS. “The suspect then left and returned a short time later. That is when the fatal shot was fired.” The investigation is ongoing.

Witnesses told the media that the suspect waited near the terrace after the shooting with his dog. Then “he surrendered completely to police,” a witness told NOS. They added that they saw the man throw his weapon into the IJ. Police divers were able to quickly recover it.

The weather was pleasant, so many people were on the outdoor terrace, including children. “My wife and I were eating in the restaurant when we suddenly heard two loud bangs,” one witness told NOS. “People came running into the building, and then we realized those were gunshots.”

“My husband told me to hide, so I ducked under the table,” the wife responded. “Then he grabbed my hand, and we ran around the corner with everyone else.”
