Dutchman, 26, killed when tourist boat capcized at Brazil's Iguaçu falls; 2 hospitalized

A 26-year-old Dutchman died on Tuesday during a boat trip near the Iguaçu Falls in Brazil. The boat, with six Dutch tourists and a captain on board, capsized. Two Dutch tourists were admitted to the hospital, local media reported.

Witnesses told local media that the boat capsized at the start of the trip, at around 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, local time. The fire department ws alerted for a search and rescue operation at 12:20 p.m.

O GLOBO reported that the 26-year-old man was on the boat wth his girlfriend and her family - her parents, sister, and brother-in-law. They were on a private tour in the Iguaçu National Park in Foz do Iguaçu, near the border with Argentina.

The two hospitalized Dutch are the girlfriend’s father and brother-in-law. According to La Nacion, they are both in a stable condition.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to NU.nl on Wednesday that a Dutch tourist has died in Brazil and that it is providing consular assistance.

The navy and police are investigating the accident. Tour organizers have canceled upcoming trips. According to various media reports, the river in the national park is currently experiencing high water levels, which can lead to strong currents.

The Iguaçu Falls are the largest waterfall complex in the world, consisting of around 300 individual waterfalls spread over 3 kilometers on the border between Brazil and Argentina.
