1 person dead in officer-involved shooting in north Phoenix

PHOENIX — A man was shot and killed by Phoenix police officers Sunday during a confrontation in the northern part of the city, according to police department officials.

Phoenix police said officers were dispatched to an area near North 18th Avenue and West Cheryl Drive at around 11 a.m. after a family member reported of a man armed with a knife and “threatening harm” to himself.

Responding officers located the man in an alley and observed him cutting himself. Police said two officers ordered the man to put down the knife, but he refused.

During the interaction, the man approached the officers, prompting them to deploy a Taser at him. However, despite being stunned, the man continued in the direction of the officers.

The man then ran towards the two officers, at which point they opened fire and struck him. Despite medical aid, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officers were not injured in the incident.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Major Incident Division is investigating the incident.
