Trump Shares Christodoulides Interview Calling the US Cyprus’s Closest Ally
US President Donald Trump reposted on Truth Social an interview Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides gave to Breitbart News, in which Christodoulides said relations between Cyprus and the United States are at their highest level ever. Christodoulides described the United States as Cyprus’s “closest ally” in defence, security and intelligence, and as its most important partner. He also praised Trump’s approach to international negotiations, saying the US president has a “unique advantage” because “whether you like it or not, you know where you stand” with him. The Cypriot president said a significant further step in US energy activity in Cyprus’s exclusive economic zone is expected. ExxonMobil and Chevron are already operating in the area, and Cyprus aims to begin exporting natural gas to Europe by late 2027 or early 2028.
